A Little More About Me...

Engineer. Broadcaster. Author. Professor.

I am an engineer and science communicator working at the intersection of science, engineering, media and society.

For more than 20 years, I have helped audiences understand the ideas, technologies and discoveries shaping our world — through television, books, digital media, live events and public engagement.

Today, I am Professor for the Public Understanding of Engineering and Science at Brunel University of London, where I am exploring how we can make science and engineering more human, accessible and meaningful to society.

My Story

I have always been an engineer at heart.I studied Mechanical Engineering at Brunel University of London, graduating with a First Class degree before continuing with a Doctor of Engineering in Computational Fluid Dynamics.

My early career was rooted in technical research. But I soon discovered that I was just as fascinated by how we communicate science and engineering as I was by the technology itself.

That curiosity took me from engineering into television and digital media.
Over more than two decades, I have worked as a producer, presenter and reporter across international broadcasters and platforms including the BBC, Channel 4, PBS, Al Jazeera, Sky, Discovery and CGTN.

I've travelled from laboratories and engineering facilities to television studios and communities, meeting scientists, engineers, inventors and audiences along the way.

I've presented programmes about physics, engineering and technology, including Crash Course Physics and Crash Course Engineering, and have created science and engineering stories for audiences around the world.

Alongside broadcasting, I began writing books because I wanted to reach people in another way — particularly young people who might not yet see themselves reflected in science and engineering.
I am now the author of eight STEM books.

Today, all of these strands of my career come together.

Engineering gives me the technical foundation.
Broadcasting gives me the storytelling tools.
Writing gives me the opportunity to go deeper.
Public engagement gives me the chance to listen.

And my professorship at Brunel gives me the opportunity to bring them together around a much bigger question:

How can science and engineering benefit everyone?
